This program is designed around the learning styles of children. You will have the chance to play games, sing songs, participate in crafting activities, and plan engaging activities. You will get to plan the activities you feel are best under the direction of our program and work closely with our staff to help these children learn English. We are a humanitarian program, but you will find that these children do not come from troubled homes as you might find in an orphanage or social service situations. These children come from poor homes, which only means that they lack money, but they have loving families and lots of support at home.
The students are generally 4 – 13 years of age. They go to public school for half of the day which is common in Cambodia and then come to Wild Rose School as an after-school program to learn English. Their families recognize the value of education and try to gain every advantage for their children. As is the custom in many Asian cultures, teachers are placed on a high pedestal. You will notice that the students will always address you as a Teacher and will generally stand whenever you enter or leave a classroom. You will find that many of them have not interacted much with foreigners, so you will be intrigued by them. The Cambodian people are quiet people which sometimes can be mistaken for shy and soft-spoken. You will find as they get to know you better, they will open up and thrive.
As a teacher with Wild Rose Schools you will have expectations that you are required to meet and operate under. Cambodia is a foreign country and culture and you must treat their country and people respectfully. It is also important that you represent your home country properly. You will be required to prepare and execute lesson plans, and conduct your classroom under the Wild Rose School model. The children depend on you for an education, so you will be expected to teach Monday through Friday unless there is some circumstance that can not be avoided like illness. In your tourist activities, there will be off-limits areas, curfews, and travel guidelines to follow. These are solely in place for your safety. There will also be restrictions on alcohol consumption, romantic relationships, substance use, and other rules that are designed only for your safety. Our code of conduct will be given to you so that you realize all of the expectations you need to follow.
